             abstract = "With the objective to structure geographical data in a digital 
                         format to develop tools to control reclamation areas affected by 
                         mining activities in the south part of Santa Catarina State, a 
                         doctoral research was developed which envolved the Fiorita river 
                         basin in Sider{\'o}polis-SC. Remote sensing techniques were 
                         pplied to obtain the land use data, which were structured in a 
                         GIS. In this article part of the results are reported regarding 
                         the automatic analysis applied on the CASI test images. The 
                         results obtained showed that the sensor could improve the 
                         discrimination of the terrestrial classes (15 classes), when 
                         compared to the classes (10 classes)obtained by Landsat5TM. 
                         Nevertheless, some misclassification still remain between the land 
                         use and land cover classes that could be minimized with a new 
                         imaging with new spectral bands considering coal mining areas.",
